We hate privacy violations and those seedy sorts who try to profit from selling personal information to other parties. We promise we will NEVER do that with any of the personal information we gather. That’s not who we are. The information we gather is for improving the reading and storytelling experience here on Fictionite.
INFORMATION YOU PROVIDE US DIRECTLY:
We ask for information such as username and/or first name, birthdate, email address, and password.
Passwords are encrypted and salted. We don’t know what they are, and we have no way of ever finding out. We simply ensure that the encrypted bit of text matches every time you use it to login.
We ask for birthdate because we MUST be sure you are 13 or older before allowing you to set up an account. Users younger than 13 require a parent to set up an account with younger reader profiles under the parent account. We STRICTLY and ZEALOUSLY abide by the Child Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) in order to ensure the safety of all our users no matter what age. On a child’s thirteenth birthday they are able to connect social media profiles to their Fictionite profile if they choose to. We also use the general age (not specific birthdate) of our readers to determine the type of story certain age groups prefer to read. This is done to improve the reading experience as well as to make us and the writers money (by licensing rights such as film and gaming).
If we ask a parent to provide usernames or first names for their children, this is simply so the parent can keep track of each child’s reading Insights, and so that each child user can know if they are using their profile or accidentally logged in as their sibling. We DO NOT use first names or even connect them with any other personal information or reading behavior data. So there is ABSOLUTELY NO way anyone else will ever be able to garner anything unique or personal about any specific child user.
While you are reading we collect data on stuff like: reading speed, reading grade level, and emotional response to the content you are reading. We track if you interact with dynamics in a story. We know if you open a story but decide not to read it, or if you start a story but don’t finish. We use this data for two main reasons: 1.) to put together generalized reading profiles in order to improve our personalized recommendations for content to read next 2.) to provide parents with reader insights on their children’s reading behavior.
A paid parent subscription enables a parent to monitor reading grade level, reading speed, and time spent reading for each child profile. A parent can easily see which stories their children finish and which ones they are currently reading. That is the sort of thing we collect reading behavior data for!
We may directly collect analytics data, or use third-party analytics tools and services, to help us measure traffic and usage trends for Fictionite. These tools collect information sent by your browser or mobile device, including the pages you visit and other information that assists us in improving your service. We collect and use this analytics information in aggregate form such that it cannot reasonably be manipulated to identify any particular individual user.
The most common form of third party data that Fictionite collects is when you use a platform such as Facebook or Google+ to login to Fictionite. In such an instance, those third parties may pass along some information about you to us. Fictionite uses stuff like profile pictures loaded automatically from those platforms. We might also receive information about what kinds of stuff you like to read in order to improve our personal recommendations. We will make it possible for you to easily share MEMEs and quotes to your friends and followers, but we promise NEVER to message or contact your social media connections without your explicit consent.
If you choose to use this invitation/referral service to invite friends or teachers to Fictionite, you may be allowed to populate email addresses from your address book when sending an email or notification via mobile device, but rest assured we will not require that you import your contacts list or address book. We won’t keep any of your friend’s contact information other than to note that they have been invited by you (so you can’t invite the same people over and over and potentially get credit on our platform repeatedly!). In the case of a school, we will keep track of the Fictionite users who have referred a school so that when the school subscribes for our enterprise product, the users who made referrals will be able to be rewarded!
Cookies information: When you visit any one of Fictionite’s websites or web portals, we may send one or more cookies — a small text file containing a string of alphanumeric characters — to your computer that uniquely identifies your browser and lets Fictionite help you log in faster and enhance your navigation through the site.
